Employment
Canning Town benefits enormously from its proximity to major employment centres, particularly Canary Wharf, which sits just one stop away on the Jubilee line. This financial district employs over 120,000 people across banking, insurance, professional services and fintech. Firms including HSBC, Barclays, Citi and JP Morgan maintain headquarters there, creating constant demand for financial professionals, IT specialists, administrators and support staff. The DLR also connects directly to the City of London via Bank, opening up opportunities in traditional finance, law and corporate services.
East London is experiencing growth in creative and technology sectors. The Tech City cluster around Shoreditch and Stratford has expanded eastwards, with digital agencies, software companies and startups attracted by lower rents than Central London. The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, easily reached from Canning Town, houses the Here East innovation centre, home to businesses in esports, broadcasting and digital production. These sectors increasingly recruit graduates and skilled workers willing to commute short distances.
The ExCeL exhibition centre represents a significant local employer, directly providing jobs in hospitality, events management, security and facilities. When major exhibitions run, temporary positions in catering, logistics and customer service become available. Hotels near the Royal Docks, including chains serving ExCeL visitors and business travellers, employ reception staff, housekeepers and restaurant workers. London City Airport, six minutes away by DLR, creates opportunities in aviation, retail, security and ground handling.
Regeneration itself drives employment. Construction projects throughout Canning Town and the Royal Docks need site workers, project managers, architects and engineers. Property management firms require staff as thousands of new homes come online. Retail expansion in new developments brings shop work, while the growing residential population supports jobs in schools, healthcare, local government and community services. Newham Council, one of London’s largest local authorities, maintains offices nearby and recruits across education, social care and environmental services.
Future prospects look positive. Proposals to develop Royal Albert Dock into a business district focused on Asian trade could bring thousands more jobs. The continuing transformation of Canning Town town centre will add retail and leisure employment. Transport improvements, including potential Crossrail extensions, would strengthen connections to employment hubs across London and Essex.
